Midland Public Schools Moves to Single Athletic Director Model in Winter 2026
September 23, 2026 - In a strategic move designed to create greater consistency across its athletics programs, Midland Public Schools (MPS) has announced it will transition to a single high school athletic director model beginning with the Winter 2026 high school athletics season.
The district began exploring the single-director model following a resignation within the administrative team at Midland High School. The new structure will provide greater consistency in athletics policies and procedures and make the most effective use of its administrative and educational resources, while strengthening support for student-athletes, coaches, and school communities.
Under the new structure, H.H. Dow High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Kevin Schwedler will transition to the role of Midland Public Schools high school athletic director, overseeing athletic operations and programming at both Midland and Dow high schools.
"This transition allows us to build stronger alignment across our high school athletic programs and ensure we are providing an equitable, high-quality experience for all student-athletes,” said MPS Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson. "Kevin brings exceptional leadership and vision to this expanded role, and we are confident this unified approach will continue the rich history of athletics excellence at MPS.”
