Homeless Student Assistance
Midland Public Schools can assist parents and families while they are temporarily between homes.
A student is considered to be homeless if, due to a lack of housing, they must reside in a shelter, motel, vehicle, campground, on the street, in abandoned buildings, or doubled-up with relatives or friends due to economic hardship or eviction. A student can become homeless due to a fire or other natural disaster resulting in a temporary or permanent loss of their home.
Free and Reduced Lunches
For every district that chooses to participate, students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 will receive one breakfast and one lunch per student, free of charge. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) encourages all eligible districts to participate and is preparing to support districts with program implementation.
Although families won’t have to pay for meals, they must complete forms at their local school to determine eligibility for other educational programs. MDE encourages parents/guardians to watch for those forms in their school enrollment packets and back-to-school information later this summer. Completed forms help districts with accessing additional health and wellness services, before- and after-school academic and enrichment programs, and guidance and college counselors, as well as fee waivers for various tests and applications.
Student Cellular Hotspot Program
We understand that some students in our district lack access to reliable home internet service, which can impact their ability to complete assignments and support learning. MPS offers a program that will provide a free cellular hotspot to families of currently enrolled students who are certified to receive either free or reduced-price school lunch. Hotspots must only be used for educational purposes by students in the household.
