MHS Principal Tiela Schurman Named 2026 High School Principal of the Year
Midland High School Principal Tiela Schurman Named 2026 MASSP Principal of the Year
November 6, 2025 - With balloons decorating the gym and a pep band setting the tone, Tiela Schurman’s family, students and colleagues were there to cheer for her when Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals Executive Director Wendy Zdeb made the surprise announcement recognizing her as the Michigan 2026 High School Principal of the Year.
“When she served as a MASSP Board member I saw Tiela’s professionalism and enthusiasm first hand as she presented for our organization and collaborated with other principals from across the state,” Zdeb said. “Creating programs that serve students who need them most at Midland High, her school community knew she was deserving of this honor and I’m so happy to see her win.”
Teacher David McPeak said Schurman understands the power of words and vision.
“She introduced the phrase, ‘Chemics, you determine your legacy, what will it be?’ to the Friday announcements she delivers personally each week,” he said. “This small but powerful message has become a unifying call that reminds students of their agency, responsibility and potential. It is a perfect representation of her ability to inspire and set a tone of high expectations and belonging.”
In her letter of support for Schurman, MHS senior Mary Doan focused on the impact of that Friday quote.
“Ms. Schurman is special because not only does [that phrase] discuss a topic that is a main focus during your time in high school, but it is a large concept that you'll need throughout your life,” Doan said. “It places the importance and responsibility on the students and how they can choose their future, and how their time is delegated.”
Midland Public Schools Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson nominated Schurman’s for Principal of the Year.
“Tiela leads Midland High with heart and genuine care, fostering a culture of belonging, joy and success,” Miller-Nelson said. “She works to create an environment in which every student is included and has an opportunity to thrive.”
She said Schurman takes the same approach with staff, providing opportunities for reflection, collaboration and leadership.
“She strongly encourages us to break out of the silos of our own classrooms so we can actually meet and collaborate with our colleagues,” teacher James Woehrle said. “This pays off in an atmosphere of professional respect and a drive for personal excellence.”
Leading the implementation of special services support including a Collaborative Room, Advisory Hour and Student Tragedy Leadership, Schurman has ensured Chemics have what they need on campus.
The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation President & CEO, and MHS parent, Kimberlee Baczewski said Schurman fosters a culture of collaboration, professional growth, and mutual respect, ensuring teachers and staff are empowered to excel in their roles.
“Tiela leads with integrity, compassion, and vision – qualities that inspire everyone around her,” she said.
Schurman will represent Michigan as the state’s nominee for the National Association of Secondary School Principals High School Principal of the Year competition, which will be awarded at the National Education Leadership Awards, in April 2026, in Washington, D.C.
“With more than two decades of experience in education, Tiela has served students with genuine care and instilled confidence in them to do great things,” Zdeb said. “I’m confident Tiela will continue to do great things in Michigan and represent our state well in Washington, D.C.”
